Training Opportunities
Erie Shores Council and adjoining Councils' Training Schedules for your use to improve your skills
latest update  08/10/10
Leaders may take the training offered by any Council or any District.  Please make sure you register, in advance, and pay the appropriate fees or registration for the training.  When you are done with the training, make sure that you have been registered for attendance and participation and that you receive a certificate or Training Card to provide proof of having attended the training.  If you take training outside of Erie Shores Council, turn in a copy of your training certificate (or card) to your District Training Chairperson (Cub Scout or Boy Scout Chairperson) to make sure your training is recorded and you get credit for it.
BSA Online Learning Center Don't have time to go to formal training that is being provided, but want to learn more?
Try BSA's Online Learning Center and you can go over the training (or repeat the training) at your convenience.  You can print off a certificate of your training and it keeps track of what you have completed also.  Simply have your Scout registration information (membership number) available when you log in and you are ready to go.  There are many supplemental courses and multipmedia presentation available for your Scouting & Venturing benefit and require no log-in or registration to access too.  Check out the resources available to you right at your fingertips.

What are these training sessions???
This Is Scouting
An introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting.  It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing.  Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session.  Ideally, all unit-based volunteers take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve.  Each Leader completes NLE training only once, but can always come back and attend again.
Fast Start Training
Fast Start training (for any level) is the first step for a new volunteer and should be taken soon after a new leader registers to support the youth in our various Scouting programs.  It is not the same for all programs, it is different based on the needs and goals of each program.
Youth Protection Training
For ALL new and current volunteers, leaders and parents.  This training is an important component of the Boy Scouts of America’s strategy to protect its members from child abuse.  This training is not required, but it is very heavily encouraged for all registered members and the certification should be updated every two years.  Can be taken ON LINE through the link above.
Cub Scout Leader Fast Start Training
This course introduces the aims and purposes of the Boy Scouts of America's foundational program, then zeroes in on the job.  Subsections of the course will brief anyone new to the job of Tiger Cub Den Leader, Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, or Cubmaster.  We also cover the standard pars of the meeting and tell where additional resources can be found.
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training
Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Pack Committee Members and Pack Trainers can complete this training in about 3 hours.  The LEADER is considered trained upon completion of "THIS IS SCOUTING" and the Leader Specific Training for their position.
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor OrientationTraining - BALOO
This training is designed to give Cub Scout Leaders the tools to successfully lead pack campouts.  During this one day session you learn planning techniques, fun and creative outdoor activities, equipment selection, quick and easy cooking, nature fun, safety procedures, BSA policies regarding pack camping, and much more.  It will especially help the new Cub Scout leader understand the basics of the BSA camping program so they can enjoy the outdoors too.
BALOO Information includes Preparation for camping with Cub Scouts, Site Selection, Parent Involvement, Health & Safety, Equipment, Feeding, Introduction to Outdoor Skills.  This Training is required for any adult who is charge of planning a Pack campout, and it is recommended that one adult leader, per Pack, complete this training.  Of course, it is encouraged that all leader attend and drag a few of Boy Scout leaders with you so you can them learn new things and be surprised too !
Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills Training
Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program and Introduction to Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right.  It is held in conjunction with Boy Scout Outdoor Leader Skills Training because the skills are very similar and you're getting ready to transition these young men to Boy Scouts.  The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook for new Scouts in the T-2-1 Program.  The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.  The course is 2 days long (one full weekend).  The emphasis is on the giving leaders an awareness of the skills, rather than on attending the course.
Chartered Organization Representative Training
(COR Training):  Understand the important role you play in the organization of Boy Scouts of America as a representative of the chartered organization to the district committee and the local council.
WOOD BADGE for the 21st Century
Wood Badge is the core leadership skills training course for the Boy Scouts.  It focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults.  It is available to all Scout leaders and has been developed for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing and District Leaders.  Its focus is on leadership, not outdoor skills.
This not all of the training available to you, this is a short list with brief descriptions of what is available to you locally.  There are many more programs on line (with new programs being added by National all the time it seems) and even more available through Philmont Training Center too.
And when you're done with training then what?  Put your training into practice and come back for more training to continually challenge yourself, continually learn more (new & updated) material and to help bring even better programs to the youth you're serving!
Pre-registration may be required at some or all of the trainings listed.  Please pay attention to the deadlines to register also.  On occasion, some fees may be reduced if paid early.  If no interest is shown or minimum class sizes are not met, they may be rescheduled or cancelled entirely.  Those that did register would be notified.  Walk-ins are generally not accepted; please plan ahead so we can provide enough materials for everyone.
