6th East Grinstead Beavers
Beaver Scouts is the youngest section in the Scout Group in the United Kingdom and is for boys and girls from 6 to 8 years old.
Interested in learning about Scouts from the United Kingdom?  You can go to: www.scoutbase.org.uk/6to25/beaver/
and get more information about Scouting for young boys and girls where it all began or… you can do what Pack 101 did!
The BEARS of Pack 101 hosted a guest from the United Kingdom in May 2010.
Bertie and his mother, Millicent, came to Northwest Ohio to visit her parents who live in Monclova (that's our district alright !).  Having just joined the BEAVERS where he lived, Bertie's mother thought it would be great for him to see what Cub Scouts are like in the United States.  Bertie lives in Stockton Heath (Warrington, UK) which is just outside of Manchester or about a
2 hour ride to London (London SSE of Stockton Heath - see the map below).
You may remember that the 100th Anniversary of Scouting was celebrated in 2007 in Chelmsford.
Bertie's mother contacted the District to see if there would be any Cub Scout activities taking place while they were visiting.  After a few inquiries, Pack 101's BEAR Den (they just became BEARS this spring) said they were having an end of the year meeting that Bertie would be more than welcome to participate in.
Cubmaster Roger Burke and BEAR Den Leader Tom King not only had an end of the year meeting, but used this as a chance to help educate their Scouts.  A Union Jack or, more properly, a Union Flag was made available for the meeting so Roger could show his BEARS what Bertie's national flag looks like.
Roger's intention was not only trying to teach them about one anothers' flag, but to teach them about how they should show respect for the the flag of other countries.
Whether it's because they have a guest, such as Bertie, or they are the guest elsewhere he wanted them to understand (hopefully) that flags are symbols of not only their country, but others and that they should therefore show respect.
Lastly, Roger also explained that the actual Flag of England is the St George's Cross, it's just that most people are familiar with the Union Flag which is really the Flag of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland).

With a little help from his mother, Bertie explained to his hosts what BEAVER SCOUTS are; which he just joined not too long ago.
Bertie wore the Turquoise uniform shirt of the BEAVERS so he would fit right in at the meeting by wearing his uniform too!
AND THEN… Then came the outdoors part of the meeting with hot dogs, chips and outdoors FUN !
